I am inspired by the everyday, but in particular the underdog, whether that be an endangered bee or a human being. I think of myself as a storyteller, focusing on artworks that highlight environmental plights and wonders, or hint at the private life stories of people.
Since 2011 I have used wildlife imagery to experiment with fabrics, predominately British species but I am also inspired by museum cabinet displays and my mother's bee collection. Many of my images are incomplete to give a ghostly, faded away glimpse of what was, of an endangered species or a fleeting sight of a passing flying bird.
My hand embroidery is quite a random act unless it is a face, where I start with the eye and work out from there. I will flit from colour to colour thread cross hatching, weaving the thread over and under until I am happy with the overall effect, I compare it to using colouring pencils. I originally was an oil painter and I like to layer up fabrics like organza to create a painterly feel, especially to my backgrounds.
I have been lucky to have exhibited my art internationally, and regularly across the UK in group and solo shows. These include being selected for the R.A Summer Show, exhibiting with the Society of Marine Artists, Wells Art Contemporary and the Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize (2015, 2023).
