My name is Gwenda Reavley, but I've always been known as Gwen. I am fortunate to live in the idyllic location at the edge of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, surrounded by paddocks and stables for my daughter and granddaughters' four ex-racehorses.
Art has always been a passion of mine, and combined with my love for animals, I would spend every spare minute sketching horses, ponies or dogs. I am self-taught- never having had the opportunity to attend art school due to my parents' insisting on me pursuing a "proper job".
In 2000, a life changing accident resulting in spinal damage led to a prolonged period of rehabilitation. Having time on my hands, I enrolled in the London Art College's pet portrait course and graduated with a distinction. My work has been exhibited at local agricultural shows, where I won prizes for my animal portraits and was a finalist in the London Art College's yearly competition in 2022.
A friend's introduction to coloured pencils, along with guidance from Bonny Snowden's online courses, gave me confidence working with coloured pencils, as well as graphite and charcoal. These mediums allow me to achieve the realism which I love to create.
I am an active member of the Arnold Art Society, where I regularly submit my work in their exhibitions. This work has received high commendations, including the People's Vote award for my piece of a Tiger completed in coloured pencils.
There is immense pleasure in bringing animals to life through my art, especially when someone sees their completed commission and instantly recognises their beloved pet.
