I create softly detailed drawings of wildlife using pastel, inspired by my love of animals since childhood.
In creating my drawings I like to focus on their sentient and gentle elements, whilst also portraying a realistic and truthful impression of the animals as well, as behind the softly drawn details are themes relating to often startling vulnerabilities many are facing. I hope to bring both of these contrasts together through my drawings in order to convey a realistic yet beautiful artwork.
I choose to limit backgrounds in order to allow the focus to fall entirely on the subject, and I especially love to portray emotion through their eyes.
Medium – I use professional artist’s grade pastels and pastel pencils, containing pure pigment, working on an archival pastelmat surface, which allow the artworks to last many many years ahead without risk of fading or discolouring.
When choosing subjects to draw, I seek a connection or emotion to the animal, which I then hope to replicate and add my own elements to. This has resulted in a portfolio of sincere and poignant animal portraits.
As much as I am able, I aim to help to raise funds for animal and wildlife organisations through my drawings and prints.
