I have always been attracted to and fascinated by horses, and always had the ambition to become an artist so it seemed natural to combine the two. To this end I gained a degree in fine art and become a painter of horses. I was promoted to Associate Member of the Society of Equestrian Artists in 2000 and, since 2013 have been trustee of the Association of Animal Artists.

The child of a lecturer and a primary school teacher, teaching was also a natural progression for me and a post graduate qualification in adult education in 2002 led to work with The West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Open College of Arts, my local council and Arttutor.com as well as demonstrating for art groups and teaching private classes from my home studio. I like nothing better than meeting a new student who says “I can’t”, I answer them with “Yet. . .”

Self-education and development are as important to me as working with my students. One route to this is undertaking painting challenges. In 2012 I completed a 100 paintings in 100 days and in 2013 I again successfully challenged myself to 30 oil paintings in 30 days, 2014 saw me expand my photography skills with another 100 day challenge.

My principal subject matter is animals, which are a constant source of inspiration in my work. Representing form and movement are a part of my motivation and are also present in my passion for life drawing, working in in a wide range of media from graphite and coloured pencil to acrylic and oil paints. I can’t really pick a favourite medium, but when I see an image or scene I feel the burning ‘need’ to paint, I have already made my mind up which media I will work in. I have an obsession for capturing light in my paintings, which is reflected in my abilities as a keen photographer. In addition to my Art Practice I am increasingly commissioned for photo shoots.
