I’m Jo, a wildlife artist based in the North East of England. Animals have always been central to my life, and that connection runs through everything I create. I love capturing my own reference photos of wildlife as much as bringing them to life on paper.
Although I enjoyed drawing at school, it wasn’t until December 2024 that I truly returned to art — a paint-by-numbers set rekindled the spark, and soon I was exploring new mediums, subjects and techniques.
I’m largely self-taught but have attended weekly art classes since May 2025, which have strengthened my technical skills and deepened my understanding of materials and process. Pastels quickly became my preferred medium for their immediacy and depth, though I also work in charcoal, pencil, watercolour, acrylics and oils. My focus is wildlife of all kinds — from the strength and presence of big mammals to the delicate character of birds.
My work is driven by a deep respect for nature and a fascination with animal expression and behaviour. For me, painting wildlife isn’t only about likeness — it’s about atmosphere, presence and connection. I’m especially drawn to conservation and endangered species, and I hope my work plays a small part in encouraging people to value and protect the animals we share the world with, from iconic species to the British wildlife close to home.
I’ve recently become a proud member of both the Association of Animal Artists (AAA) and The Wildlife Art Society International (TWASI) — two communities that share my love of wildlife and commitment to its conservation through art. I’m currently developing a portfolio for future exhibitions and open calls, and I also undertake commissioned work on request.
