Hi! My name is Martli Heyns, and I am a self-taught artist whose work blends realism and abstraction to capture the wild, breathing presence of the natural world.

I experiment and work in various mediums, including acrylics, watercolours, inks, and mixed media, to create expressive wildlife and animal artworks that feel intentionally raw; as if each piece is still in motion, still alive, still becoming.

Inspired by the vibrant colours, diverse wildlife, and sweeping landscapes of Africa and beyond, my paintings reflect both a deep reverence for nature and my personal commitment to conservation.

My approach to ‘abstract realism’ allows me to explore the boundary between what is seen and what is felt, inviting viewers into a world where textures, shapes, and movement tell the story just as vividly as the subject itself.

Born and based in South Africa, I continue to draw guidance from the environment that shaped me and my love of all creatures. I want my art to be more than imagery on a wall; I want it to be a living conversation between wilderness, colour, and emotion.

My work has been exhibited internationally and recognised through multiple juried open-call awards, which has gone a long way towards my goal of being recognised as a contemporary wildlife artist with a distinctive voice.
